DCS May Drop Social Security Coverage for Employees
The 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services may withdraw from Social Security to save costs. Executive Director Lary Nelson proposed sending a letter of intent after a public hearing to gather input. If withdrawn, staff will seek comparable retirement packages, with a two year process and about 75 thousand dollars in annual costs. Local agencies and nonprofits may choose non participation. Linn County’s Area Substance Abuse Council and the Marion Police Department recently did so. The board also weighed delaying a contract with Linn County for check writing and bookkeeping, considering private bids to save about 5 thousand dollars yearly. An audit office adaptation could cover needs for about 330 dollars. The panel will reassess a pretrial release unit schedule to address jail capacity and to move inmates more efficiently.
