Knoop’s Fake Death Case Sees Sentence Modified
A year old man, previously sentenced to ten years on three counts for faking a drowning to collect insurance and Social Security benefits, was placed on five years probation and fined 2500. George Frederick Knoop, once married to an Iowa woman, had his term reduced to four years per count, running concurrently, with probation and fine after a psychiatric examination. He staged the Lake Mead drowning in 1964 to ease debts amid marital troubles. his wife Janice L. McNelly pled guilty to three counts and received probation at Waterloo.
