Hurricane David slammed the south coast of Haiti and the Dominican Republic with 150 mph winds and towering waves. In Santo Domingo rooftops and trees lay wrecked as authorities sought aid from the OAS and the U.S. Defense Department prepared relief. Farm prices fall 4 percent in August report

Washington based Agriculture Department data shows prices paid to farmers for crops and livestock dropping 4 percent in August. Beef and pork pricing shifts, grain price moderation, and higher consumer costs are noted as marketing costs climb. Prices remain 11 percent above year earlier levels despite the decline.

Clowns at Ringling Circus Enter Cedar Rapids Run

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus brings color and humor to Cedar Rapids Five Seasons Center. Opening night drew crowds with shows at 11 am 3 pm and 8 pm today and 2 pm and 6 pm Sunday and Monday. This is the first Cedar Rapids visit in 25 years and the only Iowa appearance this year.

Carter rejects Arab oil blackmail in interview

President Carter tells Florida editors in Tampa that he will not bow to Arab pressure over oil or the Palestinian issue. He says Arab leaders publicly back a Palestinian state but privately show a more cautious tone. He remarks on Saudi oil production and denies any link between Middle East policy and oil. The remarks were released by the White House during a Labor Day weekend trip.

IRS study estimates $26 billion yearly tax losses

The IRS reports annual unreported income and unpaid taxes totaling up to $26 billion in 1976, with $13 to $17 billion from legal sources and $6 to $9 billion from criminal activity.
