War’s first anniversary of the European conflict sees heavy industry at peak levels not seen since 1929. U S defense programs and rising arms spending boost production, employment, and factory activity, even as Europe’s continental market shrinks.
Wheat futures closed with mixed results on the Chicago Board of Trade as September deliveries led a late upturn while other grains softened. Cash prices showed varied bids and Minnesota North Dakota reports noted higher heavy winter and red durum values amid fluctuating market demand. The Linn County Abstract Company reports mortgages recorded for the week ending Aug 29 totaled 584 050 dollars, up from 69 960 38 the previous year. Conveyances numbered 49, one less than last year, and 38 mortgages were recorded, also one less than the prior year.
New York AP reports Mackay radio picked up a message Saturday that the Belgian passenger ship Ville de Hasselt formerly the U S liner American Trader has been torpedoed. The 8,862 ton vessel sailed from New York for Liverpool on August 11 and was one of eight U S liners sold in February to Antwerp.

Senator Edward R Burke chairman of a senate judiciary sub committee said he would welcome any New Dealer to testify on the third term issue. Burke, who was defeated for renomination in Nebraska, planned hearings next Wednesday on his amendment to limit presidents to one six year term.

Dr W P Macey formerly of Mariesyowsky leases suite 208 in the Iowa Theater Building. He will open offices as a foot specialist on Sept 2. Macey graduated last June from the Chicago College of Chiropody and Podiatry and was a member of the Phi Gamma fraternity.
