Chamber Hails Effects of Profits Tax Bill Debate
The U S Chamber of Commerce warned Saturday that the House approved excess profits tax bill would depress business activity and threaten the defense program. It said the plan would disturb commodity and security markets and bring serious repercussions. The bill would tax profits above normal using two methods based on 1936 39 earnings or a 7 percent first 500 000 and 5 percent on the rest. The chamber urged the measure be reconsidered as it taxes profits considered normal and essential, not related to defense expenditures.
