Blaze near protest site sparks 400 acre North Dakota fire
A 400 acre brush blaze burned on private Morton County land near Standing Rock protest sites as authorities investigated whether arson or protest activity played a role. Helicopters dropped water to stop the fire while Native leaders vow to continue winter demonstrations against the 1172 mile Energy Transfer Partners pipeline that would cross tribal lands and threaten water supplies and sacred sites. Supporters argue the pipeline expedites Bakken crude to Gulf Coast refineries, with construction temporarily halted by the federal government.
