Hogs Die In Large Calf Fire Near Kalona
About 800 hogs weighing 60 to 100 pounds each died when a 46 by 100 foot confinement building burned near Kalona Saturday morning. The loss, estimated at 60 thousand dollars for hogs and 60 thousand for the building, left the structure a total loss. Fire Chief C C Shimon attributed the blaze to a stalled ventilating fan motor that shorted wiring in the attic. Wellman firemen assisted Kalona, keeping a nearby 120 foot confinement building unscathed.
