A motorist describes a night highway pursuit on I 380 as a semi truck tailgates and deliberately collides with another car. The two vehicles race through traffic toward North Liberty and Iowa City, the truck pressing the chase as police or other help is not yet seen.
Five right wing Nicaraguans hijacked a Costa Rican plane to demand the release of six prisoners. The craft landed at San Miguel in El Salvador where the hijackers and the six freed prisoners were arrested. All passengers and a stewardess were released. The pilots were allowed to fly to San Jose after arrests.
The Federal Reserve Board lowered its basic discount rate from 14 percent to 13 percent effective Monday. Dow Jones rose 19.60 points to 852.55, the best gain since August 24. No change to the 2 percent surcharge for large borrowers.

State District Judge Leonard Giblin Jr. found Vickie Daniel not guilty after an 11 day trial over the Jan 19 shooting that killed Price Daniel, former Texas House Speaker. The courtroom erupted in cheers as Daniel expressed numb relief and thanked supporters.
A B-52 bomber on a training flight struck a mesa in southeastern Colorado and exploded before dawn killing eight crewmen. Wreckage covered a mile-long trench. the aircraft carried no weapons but reportedly contained classified material. Local rancher and a Rocky Ford photographer described wreckage and bodies at the site.
