Trucker Charged After Highway 52 Crash Near Postville

Guttenberg resident Elmer Rodenberg, 59, was charged with failure to have his vehicle under control after his tow truck collided with a semi driven by 18 year old Steve Kulow of Riceville on Highway 52 a mile northwest of Postville. Kulow was uninjured. Rodenberg remained in good condition Friday at a local hospital.

Three Sentenced In Linn Court For Guilty Pleas

In Linn district court Steven C. Linsey received ten years in reformatory for robbery connected to an armed Feb. 13 Log Cabin incident at 801 E Avenue NW in which about 700 dollars was taken. Olivia Buck got a deferred sentence on a concealed weapon charge, dismissed if she stays on good behavior on two years probation, after a prior shoplifting arrest. Robert E. Cain Jr. got a suspended two year penitentiary term for third offense drunk driving and a two year license suspension. the Aug. 23 incident triggered the penalties.

Postville Council Approves Engineering Contract Supplement

Postville council authorizes mayor to sign a supplement to the engineering service contract with Green Engineering Co of Cedar Rapids to meet EPA requirements for the proposed sewer disposal plant. The council also installs a light on the new water tower and extends the ban on open burning of leaves.

City weighs pyrolysis option for sewage plant project

Jim Gerlich of Howard Green says pyrolysis like the Pyrex system could shred and burn sludge plus landfill refuse, reclaim metals and produce fuel gas. A 1000 ton daily system would cost about 20 to 22 million dollars, with payback in 11 or 12 years from power savings, plus reduced landfill costs. The council must decide on on site water, funding eligibility, and a three phase bid plan covering treatment, buildings, and tertiary facilities.
