Leonard Trachta, 63, a 400 acre grain farmer near Marion, discusses late planting, early frost, corn yields around 140 bushels per acre, and improvements like a new four row self propelled combine. He favors price supports rises and broad grassroot farmer influence in Washington.
In Moscow the Soviet Union struggles to move grain from Baltic and other ports to flour mills. Officials blame poor management and railroad bottlenecks as dockers report empty freight cars and paper-work delays. Only a small portion of U S grain has yet left the United States due to pact delays.
Des Moines voters show Democrat Kenneth Owen and Robert Lounsberry close in the secretary of agriculture race with Owen at 28.7 percent and Lounsberry at 31.1 percent among 1,000 farmers, while 40.2 percent remain undecided. Parallel Illinois and Indiana polls place Nixon strong for president and Ray ahead in governorship, with Illinois Ogilvie and Indiana Bowen leading their Democratic rivals. AMR conducted a panel survey, unsponsored, detailing split ballots and undecided totals across races.
In Coggon the North Linn FFA sale drew a capacity crowd as Angus Galf sold for 430 dollars, the top steer price in three years. The consignor was Tom Robinson of Coggan, buyer Joe Kurt of Farley. Heifer top price was 250 dollars for a Hereford consigned by George Garaway of Marion to Candice McKay of Central City. Steers averaged 240 dollars, heifers 200, with 49 calves sold. Joe Trumm, Coggan, managed the sale. Joe Yedlik and vocational instructor assisted.
Angus entries dominated the second annual Load Lot Cattle show and sale in Maquoketa with 22 steer loads and 10 heifer loads. Champion steer load went to Gerald Smith of Bellevue, with Wilson Brothers of Miles taking second in heavyweight steers. Lightweight steer honors went to Nelson Brothers of Delmar, with Ralph Danner and Sons of Muscatine second. Angus also led the heifer division, champion entered by Donavon Sievers of Stockton.
Paul Schomberg of Lone Tree and Jane Shearer of Washington were elected area representatives to Iowa 4 H state council at a leadership lab in Iowa City. The seven county area nominated one candidate each. Jane and Paul won seats from seven candidates. The state council, with state officers, plans events like the 4 H conference and state fair.
Delaware county 4-H members are honored at township award night with leadership and project awards. Recipients span categories including leadership, citizenship, merit, and agriculture, with named honorees from Manchester Earlville Greeley Delhi Strawberry Point Ryan Masonville Colesburg and surrounding areas.
Robert Bily of Spillville elected chairman of the Winneshiek County Park Improvement Assn at a recent organization meeting. Sven Uhlenhake of Osian named vice chairman after two years as president. Lawrence Elsbernd of Calmar chosen secretary and Ralph Askelson of Decorah elected treasurer of the hog association.
Waterloo dates for the 1973 Waterloo Cattle Congress are September 22 to 30, set by show secretary manager Maurice Telleen. He noted the 1972 show drew 175,665 attendees.
Palo resident Carl E. Andrews was named to membership in the Ayrshire Breeders Association. National secretary David Gibson Jr of Brandon, Iowa, announced the selection this week.
