SUI Student Suffers Bullet Wound in Foot

A University of Iowa student, 20 year old Donald J. Pyles, was accidentally shot in the foot at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house while cleaning a closet. The weapon was a .22 caliber rifle. Hospital officials reported he was in satisfactory condition. He is the son of A. C. Pyles of St. Joseph Missouri.

City Hall Notes on Cemetery Drainage and Street Grading

Seven petitioners asked the city council to have Linwood Cemetery Association connect a tile draining its property to a city storm sewer on Eighteenth Avenue SW. Runoff water now travels via an alley west of N Street and the alley’s dead end. Council referred to City Engineer Frank Young, the street department, and the council. The council granted Hennessey Brothers a grade on Prairie Drive NE between Twenty seventh and Twenty fifth Streets, per Young’s recommendation. Class B beer permits were issued to five applicants and Class C to Don Hinshaw for Us at 527-29 Third Avenue SW.

Car Burns at Iowa City Fire. driver missing

An automobile a 1933 34 Ford was damaged by fire at a highway 6 intersection near downtown Iowa City early Monday. A witness said a person ran from the vehicle as the fire began and the driver has not been found. License plates 82 12017. Registration card destroyed.

Farm Controls Not Needed Now Brannan Asserts

Agriculture Secretary Brannan said there is no need for immediate farm price controls or food rationing. Roy Blough of the Presidents Council of Economic Advisers urged a large tax increase soon to curb inflation. Officials spoke at the Agriculture Department outlook conference about output plans for 1951 and defense funding.

Le Mars real tor Clarence Becker sues the Herman R. Schultz estate for 40,000 in district court. He claims compensation for services as business agent, secretary and assistant from July 1, 1932, until Schultz’s death on May 11, 1950, alleging the estate promised him one of Schultz’s best farms but paid nothing.

Aberdeen-Angus Grand Champion Steer at Frisco Show

In San Francisco a yearling Aberdeen-Angus from Irvine & Timm of Dysart won grand champion steer at the Grand National Livestock Expo. The reserve also hailed from the same Dysart herd. The grand prize carried a $1,000 award presented to William Irvine by Frank Richards, secretary of the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders Association.

Food Poisoning Hits 16 in SUI Fraternity

About 16 Phi Delta Theta members at the University of Iowa were treated over the weekend for suspected food poisoning. House manager Robert Wolford said the students became ill at various times, none hospitalized, but confined to beds at the fraternity.

Economist Sees Danger of Huge Butter Imports

Otis M. Reed of the National Milk Producers Federation warns Sen Hickenlooper that U S price supports could shift to underwrite global butter surpluses. He notes CCC holds over 173 million pounds and cites pending extensions of wartime controls and possible removal of the butter embargo. Reed fears imported butter may flood the market and trigger CCC purchases as a countermeasure. The federal milk marketing order program is expanding with about 37 orders in place and more in process.

Parking and Traffic Changes Okayed by City Council

Cedar Rapids city council granted three traffic and parking changes on the recommendation of Traffic Capt. Bill Remington and Police Chief William Kudina. Heavy traffic prohibition on Fourteenth Avenue SW from A to C street will apply. one hour parking on F Avenue NW between Vernal and Third streets from 8 am to 5 pm daily except Sundays and holidays. The VanMeter Company was approved an 18 foot curb cut near its building at Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street SE, while a 46 foot curb cut request was denied.

The Kefauver committee spokesman said on Monday the crime panel issued a subpoena for Frank Costello of New York. Costello, once called the King of the Slots, is reportedly in Hot Springs.
