Congress debates bills to cut spending and raise 35 billion
Both chambers will consider measures to trim spending and raise at least 35 billion over five years to fund Hurricane Katrina recovery. The House previously approved HR 1461 to create the Federal Housing Finance Agency overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and to fund affordable housing, excluding non profit voter drives. Senate actions on other cost cutting and education programs are noted but not finalized.
