Early Cedar Rapids YMCA Marks 1868 Origin and 1919 Move
The first YMCA in Cedar Rapids opened in 1868 at First Avenue and First Street East with a full range of facilities though no air conditioning. It housed a swimming pool gym library auditorium lounge and rental rooms and served as the community hub until the 1919 relocation to a new downtown complex. The old building later housed retail stores and a union hall before being torn down in Cedar Rapids urban renewal.
