Iowa schools submit first state required progress reports

State education officials have begun reviewing the first state required school report cards from Iowa's 375 public districts and 207 accredited non public schools. The reports measure student achievement in reading math science and post secondary success while tracking district plans and district goals. They will inform the November Condition of Education Report and aim to increase transparency and accountability for local residents.

Ames Chamber Vote Opposes Smoking Ban in Public Places

The Ames Chamber of Commerce board rejected a proposed public smoking ban by a 16 to 2 vote after a survey found two thirds of respondents opposed the measure. The plan would bar smoking in restaurants bars bowling alleys pool halls and other public venues and council action was deferred pending state law guidance from Attorney General Tom Miller.
