Cuban riflemen facing U S warplanes and artillery in Grenada's mountains amid a growing force of about 6,000 troops. A Jamaican colonel forecasts U S presence for at least a month as the death toll and missing rise and international criticism intensifies.
Grenada reports say Soviet charges allege U S planes struck its embassy wounding a staffer. U S officials later state 11 American servicemen dead seven missing and 67 wounded in the invasion. Senate approves a measure forcing Reagan to withdraw within sixty days under the War Powers Act. United Nations Security Council votes eleven to one to deeply deplore the invasion. the U S vetoes the resolution.
A Lebanese government source said Lebanon handed the United States Marines and the FBI the names of 11 suspected bombers in the Beirut attack that killed 226 Americans and 56 French troops. The source noted none had been arrested and said the attackers wore funeral shrouds and were linked to groups backed by foreign spy services.
Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Council proposes stopping 25 percent plus discounts in January through the Legislature's spring adjournment. The move follows criticism from Gov Branstad task force members after last June's Black Velvet sale, which boosted store profits but drew disapproval.
A 6.9 magnitude quake struck 110 miles NW of Pocatello, Idaho, causing severe damage in Mackay and Challis. Two children died in Challis, and 15 aftershocks occurred within two hours. Regions affected include eastern Washington, Oregon, northern Utah, southwest Montana, parts of Wyoming and Nevada. No dam damage reported.
A 6.9 magnitude quake rocked eight Northwest states, killing two Challis children, 7-year-old Tara Leaton and 6-year-old Travis Frank. Affected towns include Mackay and Challis with collapsed buildings and injuries. Gov. Evans declared a disaster and flew to Challis to oversee aid.
