Ford pledges federal aid for NYC police and fire if city defaults

President Ford said the federal government would help assure police and fire protection for New York City residents if the city defaults on its debts but he would veto any bill for a federal bailout. He proposed a bankruptcy style reorganization with a federal court overseeing debts and a moratorium on creditor suits to protect essential services.

Halloween Trick or Treat Schedule Bends in Cedar Rapids Area

The Cedar Rapids decision keeps Trick or Treat on Friday night with Don Canney noting it is traditional. Hiawatha will observe Halloween Friday with a city backed costume party for grades K through six at the school cafeteria run by the Optimist club. Marion sets Trick or Treat for Thursday night to avoid family conflicts on Friday.

Indicators Slip as Leading Economic Index Falls in September

The Commerce Department reports the index of leading economic indicators dropped 0.9 percent in September marking the first decline in seven months. The downturn was driven by slower liquid asset accumulation, higher manufacturing layoffs, fewer orders, lower stock prices, and reduced consumer product orders, offset by a quarterly goods trade surplus of 2.3 billion.

Holmquist awarded 498000 in Iowa car crash suit

A Linn County jury awarded August J. Holmquist 498000 in his million dollar claim arising from an April 4 1970 crash on Ellis road NW Cedar Rapids. Armored Cars Evacuate Tourists From Beirut Hotels

Security forces in armored cars evacuated a dozen foreigners from the Holiday Inn and Phoenicia hotel amid street fighting between Christian and Moslem gunmen. At least 91 killed and 115 wounded in the previous 24 hours. Several hotels remained inaccessible and more captives feared.
