Barter Theater founder Porterfield dies at 66
Robert H. Porterfield, founder and director of the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, died Thursday at age 66. He created a theater open to barterers, with peak opening in 1933 as the first curtain rose to a packed house and full pantry. Notables who performed there included Helen Hayes, Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine, Hume Cronyn, and Patricia Neal. Porterfield was born in Austinville and raised in Saltville, Virginia.
