Coastwise ship strike averted for twenty four hours
A threatened coastwise walkout by 37,000 maritime workers was delayed for at least twenty four hours after late negotiations between shipping companies and unions. An accord between the Pacific shipowners and unions prompted optimism that a strike would be avoided, with tentative wage increases and hiring preferences part of the new terms.
