US livestock estimates show cattle receipts at 22 000 and hogs at around 25 000. Hog prices mostly 15 to 25 cents lower while steers rise up to 25 cents and sheep firm or higher on light volumes. Des Moines and Waterloo reports track slower trading with thin demand and mixed weight class movements.
New York traders saw a slightly lower market on Monday afternoon as copper shares led gains among select issues. Volume estimated at 1.8 million shares vs 2.4 million Friday, with key stocks slipping about a point while some gains appeared in similar margins.
Cattle receipts reach 21 500 at Sioux City with steady trade for slaughter steers and heifers. Cows scarce with large unsold prime-end stock. bulls firm. Omaha reports 25 000 salable receipts with calves 7 000, stocker and feeder cattle 55 percent, prices ranging with fed steers mostly 23.50 to 25.50 and stocker calf values up to 31.25 for certain loads.
C R Markets reports Cedar Rapids hog market held steady Monday with plant delivered prices for good No 2 hogs and sows. Meaty No 1 and high yielding hogs priced up to 50c over quotations while No 3 overfits as much as 50c below.
The Checker Electric Company at 215 First Street SE won first place and a $100 prize for its portable TV display. The award covered the August 12 to September display period and was given by RCA Victor Distributing Corporation in its Davenport division serving Iowa and western Illinois.
The U S court of appeals in Chicago affirms a ruling that Little Chute must raise and lower a disputed Fox River canal drawbridge. The village had argued there was no need for a bridge until the canal through the road was cut by the government.
Sportsmanlike report from Hinton West Virginia describes a district fair mishap where a mule threw its rider Junior Adkins, then collided with a motorcycle ridden by Otis Cales. The mule was shot after the crash. Adkins suffered sunburn and Cales a broken rib. Police termed it an unavoidable accident.
RCA reported first nine months sales of 853.667 million dollars, up five percent from 1956, with earnings of 28.32 million dollars or 1.87 per common share versus 27.893 million or 1.82 a year earlier.
Chicago futures drifted downward with wheat corn rye and soybeans mostly lower at mid session before some recovery. DETROIT GM announced 1958 car price increases of 1.5 to 5.7 percent. Overall lifts average 4.5 to five percent on Chevrolets, 1.5 percent on Buicks, 2 percent on Oldsmobiles, 5.7 percent on Pontiacs and 3.3 percent on Cadillacs. Buick’s Edward T. Ragsdale cited price ranges from 2388 to 4663 dollars, while Chevrolets run 1824 to 3335 dollars and the new Impala luxury line starts at 2493 dollars.
Ford Motor Company reports a 58 percent rise in net earnings for the first nine months of 1957 to 229.5 million dollars, from 145.2 million. Earnings per share advance to 4.22 from 2.69. Sales climb 37 percent to 4.419 billion.

Gov. Herschel C. Loveless urged Army officials in Washington to keep open the Rock Island district of the U S corps of engineers. Maxine Senninger, 24, of 420 Thirty second street NE was injured when a car jumped the curb and struck her on the sidewalk Sunday morning. She was taken to St Luke's hospital. Sofie Peterson, 403 Thirty second street NE, was learning to drive and lost control while turning from First Avenue onto Thirty second Street.
Gas service returned to Iowa City about 9 p m Sunday after a break cut off gas to about 250 homes for 12 hours. Roughly 45 employees of the Iowa-Minnesota Gas Co. repaired the line. The cave in the gas main was caused by a large cave-in under a street.
Des Moines council debates a resolution by Newton Margulies asking KANT TV to provide equal time to all candidates and for fair ad rates in the Register and Tribune. The motion to file the resolution failed 2-2 in Mayor Mills absence. Margulies argues he was denied TV and paper ad space unless buying in both papers, citing higher combined costs. The attorney notes potential bias due to a single mass media paper, and Margulies says FCC action may come too late for the November 5 election.
The Iowa NAACP delegates in Burlington re-elected A. P. Trotter of Des Moines as president and named Helen Barker, William Parker, and Edwin White as vice presidents. Viola Gibson of Cedar Rapids was chosen treasurer. The group warned members not to become complacent despite some easing gestures in race relations.

Washington AP reports the Census Bureau finds Iowa has a high share of small districts. Iowa totals 3,665 independent districts, including 1,361 without schools and 1,159 operating with fewer than 50 pupils. Nebraska totals 4,942 districts, with 975 not operating a school and 3,440 serving under 50 pupils.
Helen L. Conger, night operator at Marion exchange since 1943, will retire November 4 due to ill health. A dinner honored her with gifts from the Marion office force and Cedar Rapids Telephone Pioneers leader Ed Little presented a plaque and life membership. Conger began with Bell in 1929 at Mobridge SD.
Des Moines Iowa State Senator John J O Connor was named a political fieldman to strengthen the Democratic party organization. He will work with precinct committeemen committee women and county leaders concentrating in the eastern part of the state with a western fieldman to be named soon. OConnor a hotel operator and newspaperman was elected state senator in 1956. He is a native of Oelwein and a graduate of Loras College in Dubuque.
Decorah justice of the peace court fined Francis J. Sheridan a total of 125 for violating game laws. Conservation Officer Daubendiek said Sheridan was arrested near his home near Jackson Junction for illegal possession of a pheasant and lack of a hunting license. The judge, Clifford Schrubbe, imposed 100 on possession and 25 on the license charge.

Minnesota and Texas led with raises up to 4000 dollars, others followed with smaller increases for district and municipal judges. Wisconsin chief and associate justice salaries rose as well, with Alabama Wyoming and West Virginia also posting increases.

Des Moines report shows Iowa residents bought 25.73 million dollars of vehicles outside the state in September. Use tax receipts across 99 counties totaled 514 thousand dollars and the outside purchases were over 10 million higher than in 1956. Counties reporting more than 15 thousand included Polk 54,579 Black Hawk 27,060 Scott 25,291 Linn 24,650 and Woodbury 17,000.
Nine Cedar Rapids youths faced juvenile officers after a Sunday break in at Erskine High School. Police say six entered the building while two lowered in through a skylight to unlock a door. Investigators report the teens played in the gym before leaving.
A default judgment was entered Monday in Cedar Rapids federal court against Howard S. and Caroline M. Godsell for 224.77. The United States government filed the suit claiming the balance due on a promissory note guaranteed by the Veterans Administration.
