Russia Sends Gold Ore Here to Aid Buying
The Soviet Union ships growing amounts of gold bearing ore to U S smelting plants to boost purchasing power. About 18 000 tons have been consigned with thousand more planned for early 1935. Ore is melted in U S mints and dollars deposited in New York banks. A Leise Maersk freighter with 5 000 tons arrived at Tacoma for American Smelting and Refining. 10 000 tons more due soon. 3 000 tons unloaded at Carteret plant last week. The Soviet government will receive roughly 1 700 000 dollars for the smelted gold. Last year about 13 000 000 was shipped abroad mostly to Germany and England. This marks the first shipments to the United States, under Treasury order lifting restrictions. Some slag handling limits exist due to capacity constraints. The move could accelerate settlement of Soviet American debt negotiations as U S officials anticipate direct presidential involvement after elections. There is speculation Moscow sought to reallocate orders to England and Germany previously meant for American plants.
