Gene therapy halts Parkinsons symptoms in monkeys
Researchers at Lausanne University Medical School and colleagues injected a modified virus carrying the human GDNF gene into aging monkeys with chemically induced Parkinsons disease. The treatment boosted dopamine production, restored near normal function in three severely affected monkeys, and slowed brain cell degeneration. Experts say safety and human trials remain to be addressed before testing.
