Alcohol in Blood of Ferry Captain Drives Disaster

New Orleans coroner said ferry captain Egidio Auletta had a blood alcohol level near 0.1 percent and was fatigued when the Mississippi collision with the Norwegian tanker Frosta killed about 100 people. Autopsy on Auletta found no drugs. 68 bodies recovered with 18 survivors. Survivors described engines cut before the tanker struck, with questions raised about past risky proximity to passing ships.

Grader vs Locomotive Collision Near Conroy Iowa

A county road grader was struck by a Milwaukee road locomotive at a crossing two miles west and south of Conroy around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Operator Lewis Smith, 61, of Williamsburg, suffered multiple injuries and remained in fair condition at University Hospitals Iowa City on Wednesday. The state trooper reported the train incident details.

In Emmetsburg Iowa rural Palo Alto county a local paper poll shows Ford leading Carter 50.6 to 46.7 with 2.9 for McCarthy as residents claim the area votes with the winner.
