Council Rescinds Dual Iowa City Job Plan

In a special meeting the Iowa City council rescinded a Wednesday motion that would have created six dual appointed personnel for police and fire. Mounted Picker Burns After Oil Hose Breaks

A hose on a tractor ignited and sprayed oil, causing a fire among three mounted corn pickers on the Gerald Ronald farm about 30 miles southeast of Lowden. Lowden firemen were summoned to extinguish the blaze after the equipment caught fire in a field.

Candidates Listed for Coralville Municipal Vote

In Eastern Iowa towns candidates for the November 7 municipal election are named. Coralville lists mayor hopefuls Dr. Edwin Gross and Dan Fesler with others on the council including Ray Daber and Mrs Henry Harrison plus several incumbents and party tickets. Iowa Cition Pleads to Embezzlement Charge

Special to The Gate Iowa City Joseph Simoosky former manager of Ford Hopkins store pleaded innocent to embezzlement by agent. Grant to Cornell Teacher Funding Poetry Volume

MT VERNON New York Robert P Dana assistant professor of English at Cornell college has received a 1200 grant from the Mary Roberts Rhinehart foundation of New York City. The award supports completing a volume of poems tentatively titled Vime's Plague. Dana has taught at Cornell since 1954 and contributed to Hillside Press student chap books. He is among six Cornell faculty in the honors seminar program. Dana earned his BA from Drake and holds graduate degrees from Iowa.

Waubeek Boy Hurt In Fall from Shed

Jimmy Clary, aged 5, suffered a distorted elbow when he fell from a shed Thursday afternoon while playing at the Robert Dose residence in Waubeek. He is hospitalized at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids. The Lechtenbergs, Mr. and Mrs. Richard C., arrived from Treasure Island, California to visit his parents in Calmar. Lechtenbergs will be stationed at Midway Island for 18 months with the Navy.

Welch Surrenders After Jail Escape Audition Incident

Jerry Welch 24 of Guttenberg turned himself in to Sheriff Milton Klink after walking away from a Clayton county jail work party on Wednesday. He faces questions about his whereabouts. Welch is serving a one year sentence on an assault charge. In Iowa City piano students from fifth through twelfth grades will audition Saturday at the University of Iowa under the Iowa Music Teachers Association. Ellen Burmeister of the Iowa State piano faculty will judge. local audition chair Margaret Pendleton of the UI music department. The contest is open to the public with four divisions advancing to a state contest at Luther College in Decorah on November 21-23.
