The Gazette notes 96-year-old Amelia S. Mackey of 1719 Fourth Ave SE intends to vote Republican in the November election. Absentee ballot brought by Republican worker Fred C. Fisher Jr. fulfilled his four-year promise as Mackey, first voting in 1844, recalls Cedar Rapids past and her decades in Vinton and Indianapolis.
President Roosevelt addressed the fleet on Navy Day eve calling the force a deterrent to dictatorship and urging continued strength to keep freedom. An official report shows six new ships joined last month, four launched, and keels laid for four more as work on the New Jersey begins.

Rome officials accuse Greek troops of striking a border post in Albania at Koiza as Italy braces for possible axis action. The communique ties the assault to bombing at Porto Edda, Albania, and says seven Greek soldiers were captured while two Albanian soldiers died. British agents are blamed for the explosives. Telecommunication with Athens was cut at midnight amid mounting war warnings.
Former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith spoke at the Civic Opera House in Chicago urging voters to oppose a Roosevelt third term. Smith urged that his 1936 walk showed him four years ahead of the parade and criticized the New Deal, addressing 4600 in a Willkie rally broadcast by Mutual.
