State Auditor Mary Mossman reports that in fiscal 2012 to 2016 Iowa prisons saw fewer offenders while daily cost per inmate climbed. The average taxpayer expense reached 95.16 dollars per day, highlighting rising per inmate spending amid declining jail population.
The average daily cost to taxpayers to house each of nearly 8,100 inmates in Iowa's nine prisons during the fiscal year ended June 2016 was 95.16 dollars.
Rod Boshart reports from the Gazette Des Moines Bureau that fiscal 2016 saw costs to house an inmate vary by facility from 34 830 to 60 858 dollars while average daily cost rose from 83.69 to 95.16. Staff counts declined from 2618 in 2012 to 2590 in 2016 and prison population dropped from 8573 to 8094 across Iowa facilities.
Public workers across 32 bargaining units voted to maintain union affiliations as unofficial results show 33,252 employees covered, 28,448 voting yes and 624 no. The statewide balloting, largest under a 2017 Iowa law, counts nonparticipation as no votes and affects about 1,200 units and 120,000 employees with more votes anticipated next year.
