Air Pioneer Sikorsky Dies
Igor A. Sikorsky, 83, Russian born aviation pioneer who designed and flew the first practical helicopter, died Thursday in Easton Connecticut. He retired as Sikorsky Aircraft engineering manager in 1957 but remained a consultant, saying his greatest achievement was the first practical helicopter. His other notable feats included the world’s first multi engine plane in 1917 and early transcontinental flying with the Pan Am Clipper opening routes to South America. He left Russia in 1919 after amassing and losing a fortune in the armaments industry.
