Robotic Heart Valve Repair Shows Early Promise
Doctors report early success using a three armed robot to repair mitral valves in nine patients at East Carolina University since May. The approach, safer than open heart surgery, reduced hospital stays to about four and a half days and cut costs by about a third. The surgeon sits at a computer guiding robotic arms while a tiny camera provides 3 D heart images. The procedure is still experimental according to the American Heart Association.
