South won the diamond ace and led a spade to dummy. West captured the jack with the queen and drew a third diamond to force declarer to ruff. After the last trump, declarer needed a club break as a second spade led to dummy and West’s queen won the club jack, ending with West to play.

Endgame misplay in bridge ends one trick short
In a vulnerable deal with dealer South, a diamond sequence and trump finesse failed. The declarer erred by not using dummy’s spade entries to two club finesses, and by not leading king of trumps to force a queen pickup after winning the first diamond. West won the ace, led a diamond, and declarer never recovered.
