The Iowa liquor control commission dismissed 10 store managers and six clerks amid a broader shakeup. A survey shows Republicans and Democrats split evenly at 249 each, with 157 workers nonpartisan. Officials expect further cuts as the readjustment continues.
Glenn Cunningham world speed mile record holder spoke at Cornell College in Mount Vernon in a surprise chapel program. He discussed experiences on the mile track locally and abroad and was to join the cross country squad for a late workout.
Mrs Bessie McMurray Newton worthy grand matron spoke at Des Moines on adherence to democratic principles following remarks by world leader Mrs Anna W Smalley Roundup Mont grand matron. She urged combatisms as she addressed more than 4000 IowaEastern Star members at the opening of the state convention.
Phyllis J. Bennett of Boone receives the Sigma Xi prize for highest scholastic record among juniors at Iowa State College for 1938 39. Arnold Olson of Newhall wins the $25 George Gund scholarship for top grades in the junior animal husbandry curriculum. Presented by Dr. Charles E. Finley at the fall honors convocation.
Prof Theodore Menlin of Drake University says a partial moon eclipse will begin at 9 42 p m Iowa time Friday and end at 3 30 a m Saturday observatories and sky watchers are advised to view the event from suitable viewing sites across Des Moines and central Iowa.

Members and friends of the Christian church attending the 6 30 pm family night picnic are asked to bring the usual picnic items and their own table service to the church grounds.

The Iowa liquor control commission announced it will buy three tractor-trailer trucks to speed liquor deliveries from the central warehouse to 171 state stores. Chairman M. L. Curtis cited a 10,000 case shortfall and monthly sales growth around 10 percent, noting current trucks are overburdened and three 10-ton units will be traded in.

The Iowa liquor control commission ruled that companies selling liquor to the state must register and qualify to do business in Iowa. Commission Chairman M. L. Curtis said no back penalties would be collected, and the move targets out-of-state firms for Iowa court jurisdiction. Distilleries and liquor companies are not opposed to the requirement.

Joe Shaffer, 87, of Brandon area, was struck by a truck on highway No 11 south of Independence Saturday. He was thrown to the pavement and is receiving treatment in an Independence hospital.
Dubuque AP reports the passing of Reverend A A Hallett age 65. The retired Methodist minister died from a heart attack at home.
An Amosa district court jury awarded Edward Hronek of Oxford Junction 2112.50 in damages after he sued the state highway commission for 8000 dollars claiming the rerouted highway took 7.89 acres of his 160 acre farm. The verdict followed testimony that the new route split his land and altered a water course. The state was represented by Attorney General Fred D. Everett and assistants, with Hronek's attorney being George Gorman of Cedar Rapids.
Shellsburg high school junior class will present The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on Thursday and Friday. George Senft stars as Tom Sawyer with Winnona Bonesteel as Becky Thatcher. The cast includes Jeanne Dimmick Vernon Bergen Jean Pangborn Robert Bull Rhoda Ann Weichman Donald Peacock Bessie Woodson Vernon Vochoska Edwin Sadlon Alice Coupland Thomas Long. A Canadian cold wave is expected to push Iowa temperatures into the 20s in the northwest by Thursday morning. The state will see cloudy and colder conditions with scattered rain edging in. Dubuque reports a three inch rainfall burst, Davenport up to .63 inch, while Montana and North Dakota report snow and near zero readings. Calgary and Prince Albert logged deep sub zero temps. Wichita, Kansas set a record high of 90 for Oct 24.
Des Moines AP report quotes Paul F. Hill of the state safety education department stating eastern states show fewer drunk driving cases due to strong patrols and on the spot breath tests. He notes Pennsylvania's 1,500 patrolmen and Iowa's 125 patrolmen, and adds licenses require applicants be 18.
The junior class of Garrison high school will present Among the Stars Friday evening at the school gymnasium. Leading parts are Lauretta Flickinger and Velva Balhorn with a cast including Richard Gruhn Winifred Merchant Merlin Raymond Meridine Kaiser John Romman Melvin Christy Walter Turner Delbert Flickinger Jess Quackenbush and Oren Romman.
Howard Davis age 50 O'Brien county recorder pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a public officer. Judge O S Thomas sentenced him to an inde terminate term not to exceed 10 years and fined 1150 dollars. Roy M Hughes of Sutherland was named to succeed Davis after the shortage was uncovered.
A Hereford calf owned by George Hoffman of Ida Grove Iowa captured grand champion at the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H club baby beef show in Omaha. The contest drew 1 049 beef animals from more than 500 4-H members across Nebraska Iowa Missouri and South Dakota.
Fire crews from Wheatland and Toronto fought a blaze started by lightning on the Phil DeWulfe farm three miles north of Wheatland. They saved the house. hay oats and machinery plus one calf were lost. Mrs. DeWulfe home alone aided by a neighbor who saved horses and cattle. Loss estimated in the thousands, partly insured.
Buchanan county's 1939 levy payable in 1940 totals 12.773 mills, up from 12.213 mills in 1918, reflecting a half mill for Bangs disease eradication and a quarter mill for tuberculosis eradication as ordered by the state tax board. The total taxation amount rises to 273,090 dollars from 260,050 dollars in 1938, per County Auditor J M Gimmel.
Ninety five names listed as jurors for the next Benton County district court term opening Nov. 13 with Judge B. O. Tankersley presiding. Jurors report Nov. 20. Special to The Gazette Charles L. Thorne a 24 year old farmer living south of Tama lost his left arm in a cornpicker accident Tuesday. The arm was amputated below the shoulder after the elbow was angled and dislocated. He is in Deaconess hospital Marshalltown and received first aid from Dr. A J Havlik. He also suffered a forehead laceration and bruises. His wife sustained facial injuries from a stewing incident during meal prep for a silo filling crew.
