Byron Looper, 34, a GOP candidate who changed his middle name to Low Tax, was arrested in the killing of state Senator Tommy Burks on a hog farm near Crossville Tennessee. Burks, a long serving conservative Democrat and victims rights advocate, was shot at close range before a hayride event.
U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in New York finds former United Way head William Aramony owed 4.4 million in retirement funds but must repay more than 2 million for his fraud. The court says even a felon retains contract rights, allowing collection of 2.38 million with interest. Beene of United Way of America calls the ruling hard to understand and says an appeal is planned. Aramony served seven years in prison after being convicted of defrauding the charity of about 1 million.
John Pierson, board chair of United Way of East Central Iowa, criticizes a court ruling upholding William Aramony’s pension claims while pledging to stay focused on community needs. He notes 89 cents of every dollar supports local programs in six counties and cites over $5.4 million raised last year.
A Maryland grand jury subpoenaed Linda Tripp’s lawyer to produce any Lewinsky tapes. Prosecutor Stephen Montanarelli seeks tapes to build a wiretapping case, while Starr’s office questions copies and duplicates. Tripp and her lawyers vow to fight as attorney-client privilege is invoked.
