NEW YORK UP A federal jury found four former tax agents guilty of conspiring to defraud the government of thousands of dollars. An acquittal was issued for Maurice F. Contracts Set For Addition At Institute
Iowa interim committee approved contracts for a 1.918 million dollar addition to the Independence state mental health institute. The 300 bed project totals 1,650,205 with bids to Standard Construction Minneapolis for general work 1,263,054 Sid Smith Waterloo for heating 289,216 and Electric Engineering Sioux City for electrical 97,935. Remaining 267,795 covers elevators phones landscaping and furnishing. The panel also allocated 67,030.50 to the University of Iowa for emergency repairs to fire damaged chemistry labs and 17,102 for cleanup elsewhere in the chemistry building bringing total emergency spending to 84,132.50. Chairman Colburn said the gentlemen's agreement allowing UI to draw up repair plans and seek bids remains in force. State Board of Education will supervise the repairs. The board awarded six contracts totaling 114,348.90 for the University of Iowa Hospital School for Severely Handicapped Children with bidders including R. H. Wildman Iowa City 36,300 for general work 23,? for plumbing and heating and Russell Electric Iowa City 10,600, Model Paint Company 8,500, Shepard Elevator Cincinnati 12,975, Blackman Decorators Iowa City 21,981.90. Appointments approved include Wayne J. Deegan as chair of the mechanical engineering department effective Sept. 1. The board also reviewed tuition study. no action on an immediate raise. UI ranked fourth among 10 peers in size. President Dwight G. Rider noted UI compares with top schools in its class for tuition.
