Wide Wages Vary for Corn Gleaners Across Iowa
Iowa farmers pay a wide range of wages to gleaners for fallen corn as rains slowed harvest. Rates include 25c per bushel behind a picker, 1 per hour ahead of a picker, 12c per bushel for husking with board, and 70c per hour for boys in Algona with 1 per hour for men. In Mason City and Spencer pay scales range from 10c to 50c per bushel, with some areas offering hourly wages from 25c to 75c. Large-scale gleaning plans persist as fields recover after weather and insect damage.
