Branstad Conlin Tackle Iowa Arts Funding At Debate
Iowa gubernatorial candidates Terry Branstad and Roxanne Conlin faced questions on arts funding at a Des Moines Civic Center forum. Branstad pledged a substantial next year budget increase to the Iowa Arts Council, while Conlin urged modest calls for more funds and proposed incentives like awards and a billboard program. Both favored private funding efforts and debated the balance between arts support and other state needs. The panel highlighted Iowa ranking last in per capita arts spending and outlined goals to raise the council’s budget from 374000 to 859000 by 1985. Both candidates supported tax check offs for arts donations and protections for art objects brought into the state.
