President Reagan conditionally endorsed negotiations to narrow the wealth gap between rich and poor nations at the North South summit in Cancun. He urged four key understandings and defended U S economic success while warning against weakening the market system.
The Federal Labor Relations Authority stripped PATCO of its right to represent U.S. air traffic controllers after an illegal strike. The ruling declared PATCO no longer a labor organization though a DC Circuit Court stay was issued on appeal. The decision, 2 to 1, cited the 1979 statute barring federal employee strikes.

The Iowa Real Estate Commission revoked the license of Cedar Rapids man Thomas R. Kelly Jr. and ordered repayment of more than $18 000 missing from a real estate trust account. Kelly admitted in a stipulation the problems in the trust account. Please turn to page 14A.
The Washington Post reports the U S national debt surpassed 1 trillion dollars after Treasury transactions. The figure rose past 999 3 billion last week and then edged over the barrier Thursday as new bills issued outpaced redemptions. The debt reflects decades of federal spending and tax policy.
A vacuum pump flare up inside an Aerosol Research Laboratory packing room caused a blast at the Holbrook factory. Isobutane ignition burned victims, some losing clothing as flames rose fifty feet. About 40 employees were on site. 13 were hospitalized with severe burns. Ambulances ferried victims to four area hospitals as responders assessed the scene.
Fire officials say safety window stickers misled burglars and predators, leading to burglaries in sleeping rooms. A national drive now urges destruction of existing stickers and to stop future use as misapplication endangers children and hamper firefighting.
