Veterans Slow Return to Iowa Farms
John R. Fitzsimmons of the state labor office says not more than 30 percent of Iowa veterans who left farms have returned. Of about 250 000 Iowa men in service, an estimated 35 percent came from farms and roughly 60 000 discharges have occurred. Farm labor offices placed 475 veterans from January to Sept 30 with August spikes for detasselers and emergency work. If many veterans and others do not return by spring, farm labor will tighten.

Fence Drift in the Farm Field Memories
The piece recalls old farming scenes as pumpkin vines tangled with corn shocks fade with mechanized farming. The writer notes tractors prevent dodging vines and misses the traditional display of yellow pumpkins in the farmyard alongside harvest moon and frosty autumn nights.
Loans progress report shows limited investigations and completions
Fitzsimmons says only 126 loan applications have reached eligibility investigation and 42 loans completed. He notes veterans delaying farm returns by 60 to 90 days to readjust and decide their plans. The data reflects cautious veterans weighing options before committing.

The government announced a $1 per hundred pounds cut in the average price guaranteed to hog farmers. Effective October 1 1946 the new Chicago basis price for good and choice butcher hogs is $12 per hundred pounds, down from $13. The extension to Sept 30 1946 maintains the May 21 1945 plan. Secretary Anderson set a 1946 spring pig goal of 52 million. Seasonal variations will apply to prices with the Chicago price range from $10.75 in December 1946 to $13.25 in September 1947. The $12 Chicago average reflects about 90 percent of parity.
