Senate panel hikes Social Security tax amounts sharply

The Senate Finance Committee voted to raise Social Security taxes by 285 billion over ten years with biggest hits on employers and higher income workers. By 1987 the employee cap rises to 2380 and the employer cap to 75,000, while lower earners face smaller increases and a repeal of a 1972 pension boost. The plan taxes 6.05 to 7.05 percent over time and raises wage bases to 17,700 in 1978 and 33,900 by 1987.

White House asks FCC to study ban on phone solicitations
