Fire damage at the Town House restaurant totaled 260,855.82 with building losses of 125,000 and contents 135,855.82. Insurance covered all but 175 of July's 266,072.08 total, marking a record monthly loss. August losses were 1,630.15 with most insured. prior year July and August figures were 2,424.36 and 7,725.38.

Courthouse Judge B J Maxwell overruled a motion for a new trial for Edward L Jordan 55 of 330 Wilson Ave SW and fined him 500 on a second offense drunk driving charge. Jordan was found guilty Sept 24 by a district court jury after a June 24 arrest for speeding on Mt Vernon Road SE. Court records show a prior drunk driving conviction in November 195?.

Washington AP reports two leaders of the Huntsville space program, Maj. Gen. John B. Medaris and Wernher von Braun, endorse President Eisenhower's plan to move the Army rocket effort to NASA. Medaris calls it stabilizing and relieving, von Braun predicts a continuing, progressive space program with NASA strengthening the nation's standing.
Henry J. Behaunek, 48, a Chelsea farmer, was killed Wednesday afternoon when the steering wheel detached on a gravel road two miles south of Chelsea. His car left the road, struck a ditch and embankment, rolled over, and suffocated him. He is survived by his wife and two children. The body is at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine.
Walter Wendler of Amana Refrigeration Co. was chosen president of the Greater Cedar Rapids Palsy organization at the annual board meeting.Edward H. Healey was succeeded. James Mitchell became vice president and Sam Cohen held several posts along with Mrs Walter Block and Mrs. R. B Van Cleve as co secretaries. Norbert Dautremont was treasurer. New board members elected include David Neuhaus Fairfax T J Redhouse John Carpenter Stanley Seidler Mrs Harold Becker Norbert Dautremont and Sam Cohen.
A 63 year old Cedar Rapids man Arthur Hartelt of 1214 Fave NE was treated at St Luke's hospital for facial cuts possible head and rib injuries after the car he rode in collided with a Milwaukee passenger train at a Blairs Ferry road NE crossing about 8 am Thursday. The car driven by John B Johnson of Waterloo was a total wreck and Johnson was uninjured. Police investigate cause and conditions.

The Iowa highway commission debated a five year program based on safety factors and traffic counts to decide priority projects. Commissioner Nicholas urged a fair formula, Bradly directed staff to create one, with total receipts around 449 million and construction about 312 million, prioritizing non interstate work except I 80 Des Moines to Davenport and I 35 Des Moines to Ames.
The records itemize resurfacing paving and widening across multiple routes in Iowa from 1960 to 1964. Projects include Center Point to Benton county line on 150, 30 eastward, 149 widening, 64 and 151 between Marion and the Jones county line, and 13, 261, 6, 218 and interstate 80 work with paths that cover paving, right of way, bridges, relocations, and grading. Costs range from tens of thousands to several millions. DES MOINES UPI The list of students suspended from Amos Hiatt junior high following Monday's walkout rose to 15 on Wednesday. Four suspended students appeared in juvenile court over an interracial fight last Friday linked to the protest. Judge Don Tidrick kept hearings open until Oct 28 for school officials and police to finish investigations.
Iowa City report says Byrdie and Lester Sharp of Lee county filed a 58853 damage suit against Verlyn Davis and Gateway Trucking Co. of Cedar Rapids over a car truck crash on August 22 south of Cedar Rapids on highway 218. The petition alleges Davis acted with carelessness.

Mrs Charles (Jane) Moore of near Toddville and Cedar Rapids died in a hospital at 2 40 Wednesday. Born January 9 1902 in Webster City she married there December 4 1925. Surviving husband a daughter Mrs D J Prochaska Cedar Rapids four sisters and five brothers. She was a Christian church member. Services Friday at Turner chapel at 3 conducted by Rev Jack Oliver. William Sternad 51 died in a hospital Wednesday. Born August 22 1908 near Fairfax he farmed there all his life. He was a member of Eccles and ZCBJ lodge No 400. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs John Sternad Swicher wife Wilma Pandil married November 19 1930 daughter Elaine Ronney Ewert at home son Donald Oxford and a sister. The Western European union unanImously approved West Germany's permission to produce guided missiles for anti aircraft defense after NATO recommendation. The move does not add new weapon types on German soil but permits rockets like the British Hawk to be manufactured domestically. Germany's industry already makes jet engines and plans to build the Lockheed F 104 Starfighter while bans on nuclear chemical biological weapons and large naval craft remain.

Mrs. Joseph Svec age 62 of 21st Avenue Southwest died in a hospital Wednesday. She was born in Cedar Rapids January 28, 1887. Survived by daughter Mrs. Carl Klima and brother Charles Jungman both of Cedar Rapids and four sisters including Mrs. Lottie.
