Eu gene Root, 20, of 507 First avenue SW, arrested in a stolen car, fourth arrest for vehicle theft. He confessed thefts were to visit a girlfriend. Police pursued and caught him after a chase on Sixth street SE. Root had previous sentences and was sentenced to not more than 10 years in the Anamosa reformatory, with concurrent terms, after pleading guilty.
The Office of Production Management demanded an end to interruptions in defense production from strikes or slowdowns. The policy statement, prepared by Knudsen Hillman Knox and Stimson, urges workers and employers to use conciliation services and mediation if disputes arise, stressing uninterrupted production for national safety.
In Springfield Illinois three executives of two public utility firms faced slush fund charges. The firms Illinois Iowa Power and Missouri Power and Light were fined 5000 dollars each plus costs after pleas of guilty. Executives James D. Mortimer Henry L. Hanley and Aura C. Hall were named in the federal indictment.
Willkie and more than 100 Republicans urged GOP congressmen to repeal or rewrite the neutrality act to avoid obstructing aid to Britain and allies. The appeal, signed by governors and officials including Bowron Baldwin Douglas White Saltonstall Stassen Blood Morrow McCormick Pinchot and others, stresses a forthright international policy and criticizes administration handling of labor and foreign policy.

D R Steffer formerly of the Marak Steffer Implement company of Tipton was in Linn county jail after return from Carson City Nevada where he was arraigned on concealing assets from a bankrupt estate. He did not post a 5000 bond and faced removal to the north Iowa federal district court. Also in custody is Harry Euck on a similar charge.
Defense savings stamp sales in five months total 18,998,000 with September at 4,978,000 the highest monthly total since launch on May 1. August rose 11.8 percent while September 2,942,000 more stamps were sold than August.
Mark G Thornburg Iowa secretary of agriculture announces candidacy for the Republican nomination for US senator. He opposes isolationism and supports US foreign policy aligned with the American Legion, urging continued defense strength. Thornburg, 55, from Emmetsburg, carried 118,378 votes last fall.
Weather forecast for Cedar Rapids and vicinity expects showers and thunderstorms through Thursday with a rise in temperature to near 73 and humidity around 80 percent.
