Draft card burning inside Iowa Union sparks 1965 campus stand
Tracy recalls the day when Smith set his Vietnam War draft card ablaze during the Soapbox Soundoff at the Iowa Memorial Union on Oct 20 1965. Smith 20 faced a legal risk and a national stir as the act drew FBI attention and a looming 10 000 fine and five year prison potential. The event marked a bold dissent and echoed debates on civil rights and antiwar protest across campuses.
