Factors Point to Higher Hog Prices This Year

The Agriculture Department says hog prices will rise over the next 10 months despite recent declines. Two main factors drive the forecast: a 10 percent drop in hog marketings from smaller pig crops and a strong boost in meat demand driven by defense spending. Seasonal marketing increases are expected to continue into December with reduced marketings in late winter. Shipments of stocker cattle into western corn belt states rose July–September, while eastern belt shipments fell.
