DHS institutional costs drop 26 million after facility closures

Iowa DHS operations at nine institutions fell from 221.55 million in 2012 to 195.3 million by 2016 after closing Toledo and two mental health sites. Audit shows 11.8 percent cost decline, 24.6 percent fewer residents, and staff cuts from 2520 to 1983.

Northey nomination advances in Senate Agriculture panel

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey advances toward confirmation as undersecretary for farm production and conservation. The Spirit Lake farmer, 58, awaits a full Senate vote after support from the committee and more than 60 farm groups. If confirmed, he oversees FSA NRCS and the Risk Management Agency.
