Czech Cottage marks 40 years in Cedar Rapids Czech Village
The Schaffer family opened Czech Cottage in 1975 after losing jobs in the 1974 75 downturn. Centered in Cedar Rapids Czech Village, the shop grew from a weekend antique venture into a landmark with Jitka and Virgil Schaffer’s family helping renovate 100 16th Ave SW. The 2008 Cedar River flood slowed revival, but the village remained a key tourist draw.
