Hundreds of stevedores at Liverpool North Dock abandoned the wildcat strike defying Red appeals for a nationwide walkout. London remained largely paralyzed while Liverpool, Hull and Birkenhead saw momentum fade as dockers resumed unloading ships.
A quake centered about 250 miles south of San Diego in Lower California or off the Mexican coast caused no reported damage. No injuries or structural effects were noted as officials monitored the area for aftershocks.
The Supreme Court cleared the way for continued showing of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movies on TV. It refused to hear the actors appeal to ban airing of 81 Rogers and 57 Autry films on commercially sponsored programs. The decision preserves circuit court action reversing a lower California injunction.

Iowa officials file a petition with the Federal Power Commission opposing rate hikes by Northern Natural Gas. The proposed increase would raise Iowa consumers’ costs by about 2.5 million dollars across 20 cities, with hearings set for November 3.
