Marketing shift signals earlier hog sales this October
Receipts for the five days totaled 142,200 head versus 130,900 a week ago and 135,700 a year earlier. Friday’s receipts were 20,500, down from 33,900 a week ago. The data show a trend toward earlier marketing with the midmonth total already higher than last year, and October may become the heaviest month on record. Prices faded after early gains with hogs generally easy to buy and Friday steady to 15 cents lower. Top loins in Chicago were $18 wholesale, $18.50 the prior week.
