Republicans Push to Reelect State Executive Council Members

An executive council member said Republicans on the council have pledged to seek re election. Party leaders have urged all current members to run again to aid the GOP gubernatorial bid with a Democrat in the governor’s chair for the first time in 20 years.

Des Moines Man Seeks Coffee Dispenser Permit

G E Rhoads asked the state executive council for permission to install coffee dispensers in the state office building. He offered 15 percent commission and coffee bars offering coffee tea or chocolate. The council deferred action citing sanitation, soldiers preference and other complications making approval unlikely. Office building staff now use the cafeteria.

Building Permits Issued in Iowa City

Iowa City permits show three new gas stations for Eggleston Oil Sinclair Refining and Dean Jones along with a major supermarket project at 2425 Muscatine Avenue by Benner Tea Company. The first half of October also saw four new dwellings three in Court Hill addition plus five garages and six miscellaneous additions or improvements.

Talle To Visit in Manchester Monday

Congressman Henry O. Talle visits Manchester Monday with plans to speak at the Rotary noon event and meet constituents at the courthouse from 2 to 4 p.m. He returns from a London based International Parliamentary Union meeting where he chaired the U.S. delegation. He serves on banking and currency, joint economic, and expenses production committees.

First Interstate Link To Be Opened in Fall

The Iowa Highway Commission plans the first interstate paving contract in December with work beginning next spring. The 22 mile segment on highway 75 from Council Bluffs to Missouri Valley will become part of the interstate network. Chief Engineer John Butter notes the sparsely populated road fits limited access rules and aims to finish before snow flies.

Missing 16-year-old Suzanne Laing located after TV appeal

Suzanne Laing disappeared Sunday from Brownell Hall Omaha. She rejoined her Des Moines parents Wednesday night after a television appeal. Helen Cates met Suzanne in Kansas City and brought her to the Cates home. Suzanne said she ran away. her photo appeared on a newscast and she cried when asked to help her parents. Police were notified through the Cates.

Late Toledo Woman's Estate Set at $65 636

The Toledo estate of Agnes B. Dexter is valued at 65636 with debts of 4212. The court rules the estate subject to inheritance tax. Dexter died September 27. Heirs include Carl B. Stiger Toledo Gretchen S Riggs Fairhope Ala Leonard B Sears Omaha and Carolyn S Akerman Fremont Ia.

Newhall Junior Class Play Canceled for Flu Epidemic

The Newhall junior class play scheduled for Friday night in the school auditorium has been canceled due to a flu epidemic. The play Happy Daze will instead be performed on October 25.

Second Land Case Settled Out of Court

Iowa City reports a second condemnation suit against the State Highway Commission settled out of court after jurors were sworn. Clifford Smith Jr. and Clifford Smith Jr. sought damages tied to Highway 6 cut off. terms not disclosed. A prior Waters case also settled. remaining Niffenegger case set for jury trial, seeking 30000 for 1206 acre farm damaged by the new highway.

Beacon Man Suffers Injuries in Mishap

Fred E Williams of Beacon sustained minor cuts from broken glass after a one car crash east of Kinross at the junction of highway 22 and a county road. Passenger Bob Masterson of Oskaloosa was not seriously hurt. Williams said fog hampered visibility as he tried to turn left. The car rolled after striking a guard rail and going over the left bank.

Woman Elected To Mesquakie Tribal Council

Mrs Frank Wanatee becomes the first woman to win a seat on the Mesquakie tribal council at Tama Iowa. New members John Bear John Papapke and Curtis Youngbear defeated Ed Davenport Perry Bear and Frank Sanache to fill vacancies from Columbus Keahana resignation.

Tama Man Awarded 7000 Damages in Car Collision Case

In a Toledo area case Leonard Kriegel sr guardian for Leonard Kriegel Jr. received 7000 from Wilford Spooner and Travelers Insurance for injuries in a June 6 1956 accident 44 miles north of Toledo on highway 63. Kriegel Jr. 19 and passenger in a car driven by Larry Skala were involved with William Spooner whose car collided. William died in the crash. The court approved the settlement noting doubt on liability but accepting the offer.

Singers sought for second annual Messiah presentation

Manchester area residents invited to join the Community Choral Society for the second annual Messiah. First rehearsal set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the band pavilion in Thrill Park. Officers will be elected during the meeting.
