Five men and two women from Cedar Rapids earned upper class ratings in a 460 mile rally staged Saturday and Sunday. Al Range of Davenport won overall in the fourth annual fall rally, a major Iowa Region Sports Car Club of America event. Twenty-five entrants started from Dubuque Airport, routed to Wisconsin Dells, then finished in Rock Island. Winners across three classes include Sports First Ken Lundgren of Moline and Second Lloyd Sidwell of Cedar Rapids. Touring First Leo Woodford with Second George Erbeck and Third Morgan J Foster Jr.

Floyd county farmer Melvin Apel of near Rudd faces a federal civil suit in Dubuque seeking nearly 25000. The action accuses him of fraudulently obtaining loans and payments from the Agriculture Department programs and the Commodity Credit Corp. loan conversion program. A related criminal indictment for falsifying information to obtain ICCC crop loans was issued May 3 and a jury date set for October 26 but postponed due to a lawyer illness.

Iowa Jailbreaker Shot by Missouri Police Officer
An 18 year old escaped from Geary county jail in Junction City Kansas and was shot and wounded early Monday by a Missouri police officer in Independence. Clifford Gene Wood of Des Moines identified as the fugitive had been held on a breaking and entering charge. Geary County Sheriff Bill Crites said the escape involved dismantling plumbing and prying window bars with an iron pipe. Wood was the only escapee though deputies were unsure how many might have fled. The deputy discovered the escape about 12 20 p m Sunday.

Woman Hurt in Car Crash on Mississippi Bridge
Prairie Du Chien resident Flora Picha, 23, was reported in serious condition Monday after a Sunday crash on the bridge over the Mississippi River between Marquette and Prairie Du Chien. She suffered a skull fracture from being thrown from a car driven by Mrs. Francis Beckworth of Lenox, Wisconsin, after skidding on frost near the center of the bridge.
