General Douglas MacArthur, speaking at an American Legion convention, decried prolonged negotiations with Communists and urged greater military power in Korea. He dismissed bargaining as futile, insisting only adequate counter-pressure can deter Communist forces.
KCRG 1600 will air a recording of General Douglas MacArthur's remarks made before the American Legion convention in Miami. The segment runs from 9:15 to 10 p.m.
The speech outraged troops and mothers, blast at police action label, and accuse leaders of risking endless war. It cites Formosa, Red China, and U.N. entry as issues, while criticizing Truman era policy and urging stronger allied defense.
Two Yugoslav pilots aboard a DC-3 carrying 27 passengers landed in Zurich and sought asylum in Switzerland to escape Marshal Tito's Communist regime. The pilots threatened to crash the plane to force a landing and were accompanied by their wives and one child each. three crew members resisted the maneuver.
Four political refugees from Czechoslovakia fled across the border into West Germany after a gun battle with Communist police. Regular longshoremen who reported were described as such.
Ambassador Philip Jessup told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Harold Stassen used a grasshopper technique to rescue himself from misstatements. The clash centered on the Feb 5 1949 White House conference and cuts to aid to Nationalist China. Jessup denied any involvement, calling the claim unbelievable and saying it shows ignorance of government operations.
President Truman told editors he would consider changes to the order restricting civilian agencies from releasing security information. The Associated Press editors proposed modifications and submitted a resolution opposing the order as a tool of news suppression. J R Wiggins noted the president would modify the order if safeguards remain.
The house voted to move I am an American day from May to September 17. The resolution now goes to the senate for approval.

Doctors removed a live three inch armor piercing shell from the shoulder of Pvt. Arthur C. Barree of San Francisco in Korea. Lt. Joseph A. Maanti said the shell not exploding when it hit him is an unanswerable miracle.
Linn County will advertise for bids on a quarter-million dollar surfacing and resurfacing project for rural roads. The two-phase work covers 46.49 miles of new surface and 188 miles of resurfacing, with maintenance funded in part by citizen assessments and farm to market funds. Estimated stone costs total about 242 thousand dollars and work should finish within the year.
An 18 hour uprising at the West Virginia state penitentiary in Moundsville ended with about 1,300 inmates tied up or compliant as guards fired warning shots. Prisoners demanded better clothing and protested a dirty cook while 400 remained in the yard. Major Boyles announced a return to cells and feeding arrangements.
Cedar Rapids Republican Har rison E. Spangler predicts senator Robert A Taft will sweep the nation the way he carried Ohio last fall. Spangler cites Tafts honesty integrity and forthrightness as key reasons for broad farmer support in Iowa and the Midwest and expects a landslide nationwide.
The mother of John Masterson requests court permission for him to be examined by psychiatrists at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Judge Murrow deferred ruling pending Sheriff Reilly’s report on confinement safety and facility suitability. Masterson, 24, is held in Anamosa reformatory for an attempted murder case after stabbing Terry O’Connor at St Ambrose Cathedral.
Funeral services for George Hinshaw age 54 commandant of the Iowa Soldiers Home Marshalltown will be held in the First Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Friday. He died Tuesday.
Webster Salyer was acquitted of first degree murder in the July 20 shooting of his brother in law Charles Johnson in Alburnett. His estranged wife insisted the verdict was wrong and she testified to being in the trailer during the shooting though Iowa law prohibits spousal testimony. The 12 day trial ended with jurors finding Salyer not guilty as he prepared to return to his job at Freese garage.
