Rescue first day at college pool earns praise
Hanna said the incident offered a chance to redeem herself after a man didn’t make it. Seven pool employees helped clear the pool crowd control and opened the gate for an ambulance. Lifeguard Jamie Decker called 911 and Duden was airlifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City. He returned home the next evening after seven staples in his head. Betty Hargraves of the Red Cross commended the staff and presented Certificates of Extraordinary Personal Action. The staff later gave Duden a free pool pass and noted his recovery.
