The Supreme Court refused to hear Skokie Illinois officials challenge lower court rulings that blocked three ordinances aimed at banning Nazi demonstrations. The measures required big liability insurance and a parade permit system, but were struck down as violating First Amendment rights.
Los Angeles authorities widen the case linked to a rattlesnake attack on attorney Paul Morantz. Suspect Joseph Musico, 28, remanded on 50,000 bail for assault with intent to commit murder. Lance Kenton, 20, released on 25,000 bail, awaiting arraignment. Investigators probe two other possible links including a burglary at Morantz’s Brentwood office and a bat attack on a former Synanon member. Morantz, 33, remains seriously ill in hospital after the Tuesday bite amid ongoing child custody disputes and a recent multimillion judgment against Synanon.
Nine people arrested after a rock-throwing assault on four Ku Klux Klan members at a City Hall Plaza rally. Six drivers were arrested on drunken driving charges in Linn County over the weekend. Kenneth Jones, 40, was stopped at K Street and 13th Avenue SW by Cedar Rapids police at 5:55 p.m. Saturday. Ronald C. Doubek, 28, of Anamosa, arrested at 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 30, one mile east of the Ely exit, and also charged with speeding. Bryan A. Freese, 21, of 1724 Texas Ave. SW arrested at 12:52 a.m. Sunday on Highway 94 at Edgewood Road NW, also charged with possession of a controlled substance. Lary D. Page, 28, of Marion, arrested at 11:10 p.m. Saturday at First Avenue and Collins Road East, also charged with disobeying a traffic signal. Michael A. Petrick, 23, of Mount Vernon, arrested at 2:33 a.m. Sunday in Lisbon, also charged with failure to have a license plate light and damage to a vehicle. David A. Tesdahl, 24, of 11 Glenbrook Drive SE, arrested at 11:25 p.m. Saturday at Grande Avenue and 20th Street SE.
Tucson AP report states W. Eugene Smith, renowned photojournalist, died from head injuries after a fall in a grocery store yesterday. He was 60.
