Two Die In Martelle Fire In Marion Street Building

A fire in Martelle on Marion Street killed Tina Ashley aged two and Jennifer Ashley aged one, daughters of Virgil and Mrs. Ashley. A would be rescuer, Verlon Shaffer, 23, was injured while attempting to save the children and underwent wrist surgery. Fire departments from Lisbon, Mt. Vernon, Anamosa, and Springville aided Martelle, with Monticello dispatched as well. The blaze started shortly before 10 a.m. and hampered operations due to a water shortage.

Escapee Hunter Fleeing Into Cornfield From Rantoul

FBI and state police chase the 23 year old Dennis Hunter last of five fugitives from Marion Federal Penitentiary after he forced a driver to take him toward Rantoul Illinois. Hunter jumped from the car near a cornfield about 230 am and vanished into fields. Hunter had held a 79 year old hostage Harry Bollharst of Farina Illinois while fleeing.
